Numerical 3D modelling of turbulent melt flow in a large CZ system with horizontal DC magnetic field. II. Comparison with measurements

2004

This paper presents a comparison between numerically calculated and measured temperature distributions in turbulent flow in a laboratory model for a CZ large silicon single crystal industrial growth system with a horizontal DC magnetic field. The laboratory model consists of an electrically heated 20” crucible with low-temperature InGaSn melt, a water-cooled metallic crystal model, and a magnet system creating a horizontal magnetic field in the range 0–. Distributions of time-averaged temperature values in various cross sections in the melt are obtained from measurements by a multichannel thermocouple system. A 3D numerical model for the scalar potential induced in the melt by the velocity …

A Meshfree Solver for the MEG Forward Problem

2015

Noninvasive estimation of brain activity via magnetoencephalography (MEG) involves an inverse problem whose solution requires an accurate and fast forward solver. To this end, we propose the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) as a meshfree alternative to the Boundary Element Method (BEM). The solution of the MEG forward problem is obtained, via the Method of Particular Solutions (MPS), by numerically solving a boundary value problem for the electric scalar potential, derived from the quasi-stationary approximation of Maxwell’s equations. The magnetic field is then computed by the Biot-Savart law. Numerical experiments have been carried out in a realistic single-shell head geometry. The p…

MAST solution of advection problems in irrotational flow fields

2007

Abstract A new numerical–analytical Eulerian procedure is proposed for the solution of convection-dominated problems in the case of existing scalar potential of the flow field. The methodology is based on the conservation inside each computational elements of the 0th and 1st order effective spatial moments of the advected variable. This leads to a set of small ODE systems solved sequentially, one element after the other over all the computational domain, according to a MArching in Space and Time technique. The proposed procedure shows the following advantages: (1) it guarantees the local and global mass balance; (2) it is unconditionally stable with respect to the Courant number, (3) the so…

Cosmon Lumps and Horizonless Black Holes

2008

We investigate non-linear, spherically symmetric solutions to the coupled system of a quintessence field and Einstein gravity. In the presence of a scalar potential, we find regular solutions that to an outside observer very closely resemble Schwarzschild black holes. However, these cosmon lumps have neither a horizon nor a central singularity. A stability analysis reveals that our static solutions are dynamically unstable. It remains an open question whether analogous stable solutions exist.

Induced scalar potentials for hypermultiplets

1997

Charged BPS hypermultiplets can develop a non-trivial self-interaction in the Coulomb branch of an N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory, whereas neutral BPS hypermultiplets in the Higgs branch may also have a non-trivial self-interaction in the presence of Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. The exact hypermultiplet low-energy effective action (LEEA) takes the form of the non-linear sigma-model (NLSM) with a hyper-K"ahler metric. A non-trivial scalar potential is also quantum-mechanically generated at non-vanishing central charges, either perturbatively (Coulomb branch), or non-perturbatively (Higgs branch). We calculate the effective scalar potentials for (i) a single charged hypermultiplet in the Coulomb …

Slinky inflation

2005

We present a new approach to quintessential inflation, in which both dark energy and inflation are explained by the evolution of a single scalar field. We start from a simple scalar potential with both oscillatory and exponential behavior. We employ the conventional reheating mechanism of new inflation, in which the scalar decays to light fermions with a decay width that is proportional to the scalar mass. Because our scalar mass is proportional to the Hubble rate, this gives adequate reheating at early times while shutting off at late times to preserve quintessence and satisfy nucleosynthesis constraints. We discuss a simple model which solves the horizon, flatness, and "why now" problems.…

Electric scalar potential estimations for non-invasive brain activity detection through multinode Shepard method

2022

Electric scalar potential estimation is a key step for non-invasive investigations of brain activity with high time resolutions. The neural sources can be reconstructed by solving a typical inverse problem based on a forward problem formulated as a set of boundary value problems coupled by interface conditions. In this paper, we propose a Shepard multinode method to numerically estimate electric scalar potentials via collocation. The method is based on a special kind of inverse distance weighting partition of unity method to increase polynomial precision, approximation order, and accuracy of the classical Shepard approximation. The barycentric form, through the use of cardinal basis functio…

The MAST FV/FE scheme for the simulation of two-dimensional thermohaline processes in variable-density saturated porous media

2009

A novel methodology for the simulation of 2D thermohaline double diffusive processes, driven by heterogeneous temperature and concentration fields in variable-density saturated porous media, is presented. The stream function is used to describe the flow field and it is defined in terms of mass flux. The partial differential equations governing system is given by the mass conservation equation of the fluid phase written in terms of the mass-based stream function, as well as by the advection-diffusion transport equations of the contaminant concentration and of the heat. The unknown variables are the stream function, the contaminant concentration and the temperature. The governing equations sy…

The MAST-edge centred lumped scheme for the flow simulation in variably saturated heterogeneous porous media

2012

A novel methodology is proposed for the solution of the flow equation in a variably saturated heterogeneous porous medium. The computational domain is descretized using triangular meshes and the governing PDEs are discretized using a lumped in the edge centres numerical technique. The dependent unknown variable of the problem is the piezometric head. A fractional time step methodology is applied for the solution of the original system, solving consecutively a prediction and a correction problem. A scalar potential of the flow field exists and in the prediction step a MArching in Space and Time (MAST) formulation is applied for the sequential solution of the Ordinary Differential Equation of…

A marching in space and time (MAST) solver of the shallow water equations. Part II: The 2D model

2007

Abstract A novel methodology for the solution of the 2D shallow water equations is proposed. The algorithm is based on a fractional step decomposition of the original system in (1) a convective prediction, (2) a convective correction, and (3) a diffusive correction step. The convective components are solved using a Marching in Space and Time (MAST) procedure, that solves a sequence of small ODEs systems, one for each computational cell, ordered according to the cell value of a scalar approximated potential. The scalar potential is sought after computing first the minimum of a functional via the solution of a large linear system and then refining locally the optimum search. Model results are…
